Every Sunday from sunrise to sunset, a temporary memorial is created on the beaches of Southern California. The Arlington West Memorial, a project of Veterans for Peace, offers visitors a graceful, visually and emotionally powerful, place for reflection. In accordance with the Veterans for Peace statement of purpose, the Arlington West mission statement is: to honor the fallen and wounded, to provide a place to grieve, to acknowledge the human cost of war, to encourage dialogue among people with varied points of view, and to educate the public about the needs of those returning from war.

Think about Compassionate Action Network as the "sprouts of compassion." Compassion is much more than feelings of empathy toward others. Compassion is an entirely different way of acting. CAN aims to focus attention on what we do in the world, in all of our institutions – schools, families, neighborhoods, faith and spiritual communities, government (city councils, state legislatures and legislators, Congress and national lawmakers), and the military – to adopt and promote compassion as a guiding principle.

The Compassionate Listening Project teaches powerful skills for peacemaking in our families, communities, on the job, and in social change work, both locally and globally. The Project curriculum for Compassionate Listening grew out of our many years of reconciliation work on the ground in Israel and Palestine.  The Project now offers trainings and workshops worldwide for everyday peace-building, as well as an Advanced Training and Facilitator Certification program. Compassionate Listening was originated by Gene Knudsen Hoffman -international peacemaker, founder of the US/USSR Reconciliation program for the Fellowship of Reconciliation, and student of Vietnamese Buddhist Monk, Thich Nhat Hanh. The concepts were further developed by Leah Green, Carol Hwoschinsky, and a group of dedicated individuals who are now facilitators of the work.

The Heritage Institute offers continuing education for teachers, revitalizing the enthusiasm for their calling in the more than 3,000 educators we reach annually. Through workshops, field courses, global travel studies and distance courses given by more than 100 adjunct faculty members, the Institute does its best to teach subjects in a larger context. The content they offer becomes a vehicle to learn about whom we are, our relationships to everything around us, the beauty in the world, our connection and obligation to our communities and the larger whole. The Institute’s philosophy to “educate for humanity and the world we want” considers character more important than content, and the development of whole human beings above simple knowledge.

The Refugee Project is a three-hour simulation which transforms groups into refugees, escaping for their lives…Separated into “families” from various countries and transformed by ethnic clothing, groups must memorize their biographies before visiting the U.S. Department of State, a refugee station and a medical screening clinic. Families must pass interviews at each of these stations in order to “escape to freedom.” Since June 2002, over 2,500 people and 51 churches, schools, and non-profit organizations have participated in this life-changing experience in Seattle’s International District.
